/chemical peel faq
Is there anything I need to do to prepare my skin for a chemical peel?
One week prior to your scheduled peel, you should avoid electrolysis, waxing, depilatory creams, laser hair removal, and sun exposure. Patients should be using a sunscreen containing Zinc Oxide 5% or more. Sunscreens containing 5% Zinc Oxide and higher are available for purchase at our office.
GLYCOLIC PEEL
Prior to beginning a glycolic acid peeling procedure, it is necessary that the patient undergo a 2 week minimum of pretreatment with twice daily use of glycolic acid home care products. This helps improve peel results as well as identify potential allergies or skin sensitivities to glycolic acid.
You should stop using AHAs or Retin-A type products for 24-48 hours before your scheduled peel.
VITALIZE or REJUVENIZE PEEL
You should stop using Retin-A, Renova, Differin (Adapalene 0.1%), Tazorac, or any product containing Retinols, Vitamin-C, alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), GHA, beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs), benzoyl peroxide, or tretinoin for 5-7 days before your scheduled peel.
What are Post Peel instructions?
Avoid sun exposure 1 week after treatment and use sunscreen with Zinc Oxide 5% or greater throughout the course of treatment. Avoid wearing foundations after the treatment or during the days when the skin is actually peeling. When washing your face, use a gentle cleanser and do not scrub the skin. Do not "help" the skin to peel in order to avoid scarring or rashes. Flaking can be controlled with a moisturizer. Use of Retin-A, alpha hydrozy acid products, or bleaching creams can be resumed only after the peeling process is complete.
Who should not be treated?
Those who should not be treated include those with active cold sores or warts, skin with open wounds, sunburn, dermatitis, inflammatory rosacea, rashes , sensitivity to any of the peel components or allergy to aspirin, Accutane use in the past year, recent chemotherapy or radiation therapy, pregnant or breastfeeding women.
What can I expect post-peel?
The peel requires little or no downtime for the patient. Patients can resume normal activities but may want to avoid strenuous exercise for at least 2-3 days, as the perspiration may irritate the skin.
Patients may have a light yellow tinge immediately after the procedure. This is temporary and will fade in 1-2 hours or with cleansing the evening of treatment. Also the skin may be more red than usual for 2-3 days. Within 48 hours flaking may occur which can be controlled with moisturizers. Peels are recommended in a series of 6 at three week intervals for maximum benefit. Some patients notice improvement with one peel. Skin will feel softer and smoother with improvement in epidermal texture. Others may notice improvement in hyperpigmentation and reduction of englarged pores. More dramatic results are often noted after 3 peels.
I'm not sure if I have any glycolic products at home. Where can I get these? Should I use them all the time, or just during my series of peels?
We sell several skincare products that contain glycolic acid, from cleansers to moisturizers, and there are several benefits to using glycolic acid on a regular basis. Glycolic acid, which is an alpha-hydroxy acid, helps to shed dead skin cells and hydrate the skin at the same time. During your complimentary consultation, a skincare specialist will assist you in selecting the product that is right for you.
